The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge is a unique walk/run event open to individuals and teams of 2 ages 15 and older. Complete a 1-mile loop within an unpaved macadamia nut orchard on a dirt trail every 20 minutes for up to 12 hours, or until all competitors have been eliminated. Individuals must complete the 1 mile loop within 20 minutes and be within the chute area at the start of the next loop or be eliminated. Teams of 2 must alternate competitors each mile. If a team member cannot complete the 1-mile loop within 20 minutes both team members are eliminated. If you complete the loop in less than 20 minutes you can rest, eat/drink, and change clothes within a designated area where you can erect a secured, weighted tent shelter. Competitor Support Team members are allowed in the tent area but not on the event course. Competitors can walk or run and walking sticks are permitted. The 1-mile loop has an elevation gain of 63 feet.
The 1-20-12 Endurance Challenge is sponsored by Vivawell, Inc., a 501c3 Hawaii island-based health promotion nonprofit organization dedicated to preventing chronic health conditions with diet, exercise, stress reduction, social support and health-supporting environments. The event is co-sponsored by Hawaiian Macadamia Nut Orchards. Event proceeds and donations benefit Vivawell's community programs serving the East Hawaii island Districts of Hilo, Puna and Ka'u.
