First held in 1915 as a test of marching endurance for soldiers in the Norwegian Military. A strategic goal was to efficiently move larger units of troops over great distances, ensuring readiness after the march while carrying an 11 kg rucksack.
The current goal is to stimulate interest in extended distance marching among military and civilian personnel.
The test involves a 30km/18.6 mile march with a rucksack weighing 11kg (24 lbs). There is no requirement to carry a rifle.
Participants must wear an approved military uniform, which includes a field uniform and military-grade boots. Civilian clothing is allowed during events open to civilians.
Rucksacks must weigh a minimum of 11 kg/24 lbs at both the start and finish lines. Note that water weight is not included in the weighing process.
Participants may use a civilian equivalent of a rucksack, such as hiking backpacks or GoRuck bags, provided they have waist belt capabilities.
Non-participant assistance is prohibited, except for timing, weighing, hydration/food stations, and first aid.
For clarifications on uniform and rucksack regulations, contact CDT Brutvan at brutvacg@mail.uc.edu.
All participants will begin the ruck at 0700. Ruckers should position themselves according to their anticipated pace as follows:
