3.21 Dash for Down Syndrome 5K Run/Walk

🏃‍♀️Event Overview

The Down Syndrome Network of Greater Greensboro (DSNGG) invites you and your family to participate in its 8th annual 5K walk/run, in honor of World Down Syndrome Day!

📏The Extra Dash

People with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome, so this race has a little something EXTRA too:

• Official Timing: Official times will be recorded at the 5K finish line.
• Extra Distance: Runners will dash an extra 0.1-mile to finish at 3.21 miles in honor of the 3rd copy of the 21st chromosome.
• Cheer Squad: You may be accompanied by DASHers with Down syndrome to cheer you on.
• Thank You: Participants will receive appreciation from DASHers for your support.

🌟Supporting the Community

Event proceeds will benefit the DSNGG in its efforts to support individuals with Down syndrome (Ds) and their families in our community:

• Welcome Bags: Providing welcome bags for new parents in the hospital.
• Educational Support: Hosting speakers on special education rights and financial planning.
• Financial Assistance: Offering assistance and scholarships for medical or therapeutic services.
• Events and Programs: Continuing to provide various programs and events to families.

🧦Lots of Socks Campaign

Runners are encouraged to take part in the Lots of Socks campaign:

• Sock Variety: Wear brightly colored socks, long socks, printed socks, 1 sock … even 3 socks for 3 chromosomes!
• Engagement: Choose something that sparks conversation about World Down Syndrome Day.

📚Understanding Down Syndrome

Did you know that people with Down syndrome have an extra chromosome? Here are some facts:

• Chromosome Count: Most people have two copies of 23 different chromosomes.
• Trisomy 21: Individuals with Down syndrome are born with three copies of the 21st chromosome.
• Small Difference: This condition is simply one chromosome difference!
• Total Distance: The race will cover a total distance of 3.21 miles to represent this.
