Black Canyon Donkey Derby 2025

🎉 Event Overview

Get ready for the 5th annual Black Canyon Donkey Derby, held at Deep Canyon Ranch, in Black Canyon City, Arizona! The race will be Saturday, March 8th, but be sure to come for a full weekend of FUN (events listed below).

🐴 What is Burro Racing?

First, let's talk about what a burro is. “Burro” is the Spanish word for donkey.

“Pack burro racing is a sport rooted in the mining histories of western states. Legend has it that races trace back to miners racing to claims offices with their burros. During a burro race, a runner and a burro will run/walk together, with the runner leading the burro on a lead rope. At the Black Canyon Donkey Derby, there will be a 3-mile, 6-mile, or 9-mile course suitable for all levels of experience.

📜 Race Rules

🔗 Lead Ropes

All burros must be properly fitted with a halter and lead rope no longer than 15 feet. The lead rope must be attached to the halter at all times.

📏 Control of Burro

Participants must maintain control of their burros through the lead rope. Following the designated trail is mandatory.

🦙 Jack/Stud Chains

Jack/stud chains may be used safely to control higher-spirited burros. Any injury resulting from their use may lead to disqualification.

👥 Team Requirement

A team consists of one handler and one burro. Children 12 & under can have an adult helper during the race.

⚕️ Veterinary Checks

It's wise to have a vet check prior to the event as sick or injured burros may not participate.

⚠️ Disqualifications

Mistreating a burro or using prohibited tools will lead to disqualification. Runners can still finish but may appeal penalties.

📝 Participant Waivers

All participants must sign a waiver/release of liability before racing to partake in risk acknowledgment.

🛖 Camping

Dry camping is available at Deep Canyon Ranch. Camping fee is $10/spot per night. Contact Jacie Greer for stall reservations at 602-885-9369.

📅 Schedule of Events

Friday, March 7th:

• Check in with the ranch manager.
• Homemade dinner for campers provided by Carolyn Lee & Sandam Ranch.

Saturday, March 8th:

• 8:00 am Race Check-In
• 9:00 am Race Meeting
• 10:00 am Race starts!
• After all racers return, Awards Ceremony

Sunday, March 9th:

• 9:00 am Obstacle Course Challenge
• 10:00 am Halter Class
• 11:00 am Mad Ass Dash Competition
• Noon: Pack up camp and safe travels home!
