Spencer Glacier Dash

🏔️ Race Overview

Come celebrate the beauty of the Spencer Glacier Area and the history of the Alaska Railroad History by racing the Spencer Glacier Overlook Trail which retraces the glacier recession over the last 100 years.

💰 Cost

• Early Bird Pricing (March 31st-April 7th): Adult (ages 12+) = $105.50 ($45.50 discounted train ticket plus $60 race registration fee). Youth (ages 7-11) = $63 ($23 discounted train ticket plus $40 race registration fee). No refunds will be given.
• Pricing (April 8th – May 12th): Adult (ages 12+) = $115.50 ($45.50 discounted train ticket plus $70 race registration fee). Youth (ages 7-11) = $73 ($23 discounted train ticket plus $50 race registration fee). No refunds will be given.
• Pricing (May 13th – May 20th): Adult (ages 12+) = $125.50 ($45.50 discounted train ticket plus $80 race registration fee). Youth (ages 7-11) = $83 ($23 discounted train ticket plus $60 race registration fee). No refunds will be given.
• Registration Deadline: Registration closes at midnight on May 20th, roughly two weeks prior to race day due to restrictions to ticketing. This race is capped at 100 people.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Family & Friends

• Tickets: Family and friends are invited to join, but need to purchase tickets. Prices are $91 for adults (12+), $46 for youth (2-11), $46 for youth under 2 requiring a seat, and $0 for infants in a lap.
• Registration Option: During registration, you can choose a family/friend registration option. KMTA will handle all ticket purchases for racers.

📍 Location

• Starting Point: Take the Alaska Railroad to the starting line of the race! The cost of your ticket is included in your race registration fee.
• Portage Train Depot: Located at Mile 80.3 of the Seward Highway - Look for the small red-roofed building adjacent to the Seward Highway.

🚂 Departure Options

• Option 1: Leave the day before (June 7th) – Train departs at 1:25 PM. Be at the train station by 1:15 PM.
• Option 2: Leave on race day (June 8th) – Train departs at 1:25 PM. Be at the station by 12:45 PM to check in.

🔙 Return Information

• Day of Race: Train departs from the Spencer Whistle Stop at 4:45 PM. Be at the train stop by 4:30 PM.
• Gear Policy: All gear can be taken to the cargo train.

🎒 Gear/Bag Drop

• Drop Options: Gear can be dropped in the Chugach Adventures Van upon de-boarding the train or left at the Whistlestop.
• Cargo Train: Gear that cannot be carried may go on the cargo train car.

💧 Water/Snacks

• Bring Your Own: Please bring your own water container to minimize waste. Containers can be refilled on site.
• Post-Race Snacks: Snacks will be provided after the race.

🏃‍♂️ The Race Course

• Course Access: The race start is accessible only via the Alaska Railroad. The course runs from Spencer Whistle Stop to Spencer Lake and back for a total of 5 miles.
• Return Transportation: Participants may walk back or wait for a shuttle from Chugach Adventures.

📅 Race Format

• Arrival: All participants arrive at the Spencer Whistle Stop courtesy of the Alaska Railroad.
• Start Time: Race is estimated to start around 2:25 PM, but will depend on the arrival of the Glacier Discovery Train.

👶 Age Limits

• Participants: Open to participants over 7 years of age. Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult.

⚠️ Safety

• Bear Country: This race takes place in bear country: please bring bear spray.

This race is under permit with the U.S. Forest Service.
