🏃‍♀️ Soroptimist Stop Human Trafficking 5k

We are hosting our 3rd annual 5k run on April 27th, 2025! This Run will be Chip Timed by Under the Sun Events. We are very excited to launch this run again this year. As last year, our efforts in part benefit a worldwide issue that we feel strongly about.

🌍 The Impact of Trafficking

• Vulnerable groups: Human trafficking can happen to anyone, but some people are more vulnerable than others, including recent migrants, those with substance use or mental health illnesses, people with limited education, and individuals experiencing poverty or homelessness (especially youth).
• Trafficker manipulation: Traffickers may prey on these vulnerabilities to create a dependent relationship, making it more difficult for victims to leave.
• Types of abuse: Most frequently, people are trafficked by someone they know, and the manipulation often escalates to physical, emotional, and financial abuse.
• Recovery support: Once immediate safety is established, acquiring skills and competencies for sustainable livelihoods is crucial for a successful recovery for trafficked individuals.

👩‍⚕️ Support for Trafficked Individuals

• Financial struggles: Women and girls who have been trafficked often suffer financially, relying on their trafficker or forced to turn over their earnings to them.
• Post-escape challenges: Even after they escape and are safe, they often face unfair societal stigma that can make finding meaningful employment difficult.
• Soroptimist intervention: Soroptimists have decades of experience providing intervention through education awards and other financial support.
