The Sandpiper Sprint is entering year TWO! Hosted in partnership between Alabama Audubon and Baldwin County Sewer Service this race will be held in Summerdale, Alabama on April 26th. The course starts and ends in the heart of downtown Summerdale next to Pioneer Park. For the first part of the race participants will head south into a more agricultural landscape that the area is known for. Around mile 2 the race reenters the tree lined neighborhoods of Summerdale where supporters can help cheer their runners on towards the finish line! (Check out the certified race course here.) The race ends back at Pioneer Park where awards, food, and festivities from sponsors and local environmental organizations await!
Our 1 mile Fun ‘Run’ course makes its way through the neighborhood and is perfect for little ones, families, and anyone else who doesn’t want to take on the full 5k but still wants to be part of the fun! This event is open to everyone of all ages and will be a perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors, whether running or not.
Both of these events welcome runners, walkers, joggers, and everything in between.
But this is more than a race, it's a celebration of the birds that depend on the unique and vital habitats found in Baldwin County. From songbirds in your backyard to the shorebirds on our beautiful beaches, birds are dependent on the health of area ecosystems for survival. This includes the health of native plants and pollinators too. Birds need insects, insects need native plants—and they need you to help protect a future for it all!
Alabama Audubon':s work on the coast combines science, research, and education to help ensure a future for the birds we love. Recent studies suggest we have lost 29 percent of overall wild bird populations (approx. 3 billion birds) since the 1970':s largely due to habitat loss. Shorebird populations specifically have decreased by almost 38%. The story of the challenges facing birds is unfolding before our eyes. Help us do the work to give birds a voice. All proceeds from this race go directly towards the work our Coastal Bird Stewardship program is doing in Mobile and Baldwin County, which provides critical protection and monitoring for the 13 species of birds that depend on Alabama beaches for nesting and raising their chicks.
